A Smart Dog

Some years ago we were living on Upper Lake St. Croix at Solon Springs, Wisconsin, where we had a partly wooded ten-acre tract.  On this we built a barn and converted most of the space into pasture for two cows...

Read the story  about a very smart dog by Angela Haste Favell, who lived in the Solon Springs area.

Blue Moon, Ricky Raccoon, and UNO: St. Croix Summer Adventures

It was June, 1981.  Son Adam was about 2 years old.  He and I needed an adventure together.  Younger son, Seth, was not quite a year old, and needed time alone with  Mom.  So Adam and I packed his booster seat in the car...

Read the story about a summer adventure by Dr. Thomas W. King, who lives and writes in Solon Springs.

Hankadookadee and the Worm Bus

Ahhh, the imagination of a four year old!

When our younger son, Seth, was a little guy, we often went fishing on Upper St. Croix Lake and River, near our family’s pioneer homestead at Solon Springs, WI, in rural Douglas County.  Part of the big adventure of fishing with hook and line with a kid that age is first digging the worms.....

Read the story  about a four-year old son by Dr. Thomas W. King, who lives and writes in Solon Springs.

Lucius Woods Memories

A flood of wonderful memories comes to mind as I think of Lucius Woods State Park, now a Douglas County park in Solon Springs, WI.  Some of these remembrances are from pictures or discussions with older family members.  Most are my own memories from direct personal experiences in the park for nearly six decades....

Read the four part story as published in the Superior Daily Telegram in March-April 2007 by Dr. Thomas W. King, who lives and writes in Solon Springs.

River of Life

Onward, onward runs the river
Over rapids laughs with glee
'Round the bends of rocks and sand bars
Onward, onward to the sea......

Read the poem  created by Kay Karras, Poet Laureate of Solon Springs, who lives and writes in the Solon Springs area.

Solon Springs--Small Town with a Large History

All eyes turn expectantly to Mrs. Kaldor, the third grade teacher at St. Croix Elementary School.

"Chelsea's grandmother is here today to tell us some of the history of Solon Springs."

I glance down now at the items on the Show and Tell table and begin.....

Read the story  heard by our 3rd grade class in 2001, by Jo Stewart, who lives and writes in the Solon Springs area

St. Croix River Trip

Isaiah's fifth birthday present from his dad was the very best present he had ever received.  Dad had promised him a St. Croix River fishing trip with his Uncle Pat.  As long as he could remember, his best times were with his Dad, at his granny's house summerhouse up North near the St. Croix River.....

Read the story   about a son that was tougher than first appeared by Jackie Schippers

To Check the Trail

Trails and hiking are important in our family’s daily lives. As residents of Solon Springs, Wisconsin, our family and we have been fortunate that our rural homestead borders a local Douglas County segment of the 4,500-plus mile North Country Trail. Our home and barn are on a high bank overlooking Upper St. Croix Lake and Crownhart Island, which we view many times every day, every year. This is truly paradise.
