Festival of the Arts  (Hosted by Rural Arts Voice of North (RAV'N) and St. Croix Writers Club)  Art and crafts display all day, 'St. Croix Summer' performance by musicians from Twin Ports and northwestern WI at 12:30pm; Introduction of St. Croix Writers by Jo Stewart at 1pm; Woodtones barbershop quartet at 2pm.  Solon Springs Community Center

All Saturday Events are Free!

  Solon Springs Area  
9:00 am-4:00 pm #S-1  Voyageur Canoe Paddle/Ride (WDNR staff will host and provide some of the propulsion).   Canoes leave on the hour.  Children 5 years and older accompanied by an adult can ride, but they must bring their own life preserver (we only have adult sizes). Palmer Landing dock (Directions: St. Croix Lake boat landing on County Road A on northeast corner of Upper St. Croix Lake)
9:30 am #S-2  St. Croix River Paddle (UW-Extension, St. Croix Basin; Friends of the St. Croix Headwaters).  Inaugural paddle of the St. Croix River Water Trail.  Participants must bring canoe/kayak, sack lunch, and life jacket.  Drinks are on us and interpretive staff will be provided.  Paddle will take 3-4 hours and end at the Gordon Ranger Station; only small rapids will be encountered.  Transportation will be provided back to the launch site.   Link to more information Departure from Main Street Dock (next to St. Croix Inn, Solon Springs).  Lunch will be at Cut-Away bridge. 10 am #S-3  St. Croix Portage Trail Hike (Brule-St. Croix Chapter of the North Country Trail Association; Josh McIntyre, WDNR).  Somewhat strenuous 2-mile path going up and down valley walls between Brule River and Upper St. Croix Lake; pace will be leisurely.  Download North County Trail Map (requires Adobe Reader) Palmer Landing (Directions: St. Croix Lake boat landing on County Road A on northeast corner of Upper St. Croix Lake)
10 am-3 pm #S-4  Festival of the Arts (Rural Arts Voice of North (RAV'N);  St. Croix Writers Club).  Art and crafts display;  'St. Croix Summer' orchestral performance by musicians from Twin Ports and northwestern WI of an original composition by Solon Springs resident, Thomas W. King at12:30 pm; introduction of works by St. Croix Writers Club hosted by Jo Stewart at 1pm.  The Woodtones barbershop quartet performs at 2pm. Solon Springs Community Center, Business Highway 53
10 am-4 pm #S-5  Pontoon Tour (Upper St. Croix Lake Association).  Pontoons leaving on the hour.  Sign-up sheet at the dock. No age restriction. Main Street Dock (next to St. Croix Inn, Solon Springs)
2 pm #S-6  Boardwalk Hike  (Brule-St. Croix Chapter of the North Country Trail Association; Josh McIntyre, WDNR).   Solon Springs Youth Event Schedule:  
10 am - 12 noon #S-7  Macroinvertebrate Mania (for 8th-11th graders) (Kris Stepenuck, UW-Extension, Water Action Volunteers).  For those who are interested in learning more about the life that lurks beneath the surface of streams.  We'll head out to the stream to collect some samples and then use microscopes, field guides and keys to help identify our catch. Learn some fun facts about these critters, how/what they eat, how they breathe, and about their structure and adaptations that make life a little easier in the water for them.  Link to more Macroinvertebrate Mania information. 10:00  am-1:30 pm #S-8  Free Children's Festival (Lucius Woods Performing Arts Center).  Children 2-10 years old. Children have a treat in store with musical theater designed just for them. The St. Croix Performing Arts Club will be presenting "Quack". It is a story with a message of tolerance and acceptance. This event will also feature an Ojibwa story teller dressed in authentic traditional native attire who will captivate the audience with folklore of the native peoples. 9 am #G-1  Conservation Case Study (West Wisconsin Land Trust).   A site visit for people interested in conservation easements as a means of permanent land protection on private property. Meet at Bergeman Plumbing and car pool to the site.  (Directions:  west on County Road Y from Highway 53 a short distance, then south on Snowberry Lane )

10 am #G-4  Underwater Video Program (St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, National Park Service; Matt Berg and students from Grantsburg High School).   Join National Park Service SCUBA divers and Grantsburg High School students to learn about diving, view divers working underwater, and watch the underwater world of the Gordon Flowage live on video. Take Me To The River

St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, part of your National Park System, is celebrating 40 years as one of the nation's first wild and scenic rivers. Working cooperatively, the National Park Service, the University of Wisconsin-Extension, and the University of Minnesota Extension are creating opportunities for people throughout the area to share in this celebration.

Their joint effort, Take Me to the River, involves special events and service-learning projects to promote stewardship and understanding of the Riverway, its watershed and unique resources.
